Although they sound similar, MyTelly and Dynamic DNS work differently.

My Private Network’s MyTelly service cannot be used as a Dynamic DNS service.

In this knowledge base article, we’ll walk you through a few things, namely:

What is DNS?

What is MyTelly?

What is Dynamic DNS?

By the end of this article, we hope to clarify the differences between our service, MyTelly, and Dynamic DNS service providers so you can have a clear understanding between the differences of our services.

What is DNS?

To put it into layman’s terms, DNS, or Domain Name System, works like a phone book for the Internet.

Every website available on the Internet is assigned an IP address.

Unfortunately as IP addresses are a string of seemingly random numbers, it’s almost impossible for everyone to remember every website’s individual IP address.

Because of this, we use DNS to put a name to each IP address. For example, instead of typing 216.58.221.36 to access Google’s website, we can simply type in www.google.com instead to access the page.

What is Dynamic DNS?

Many Internet Service Providers, or ISPs, provide a dynamic IP address to their customers. These dynamic IP addresses can change at any time due to many factors, such as being disconnected momentarily from the Internet or if the network router is somehow restarted.

What Dynamic DNS does is provide a static hostname which automatically updates whenever an IP address change is detected.

With Dynamic DNS, if you need to have constant remote access to your home PC or home IP camera, you do not have to worry about your network IP address changing as you will only need to connect to the Dynamic DNS hostname to access your remote network.
